Quick Answer
Most missing Google reviews fall into one of five buckets: policy filtering, spam filtering, duplicate accounts, profile issues, or reviewer deletion. Start by confirming the review exists on the reviewer's profile. If it does, the issue is on your side. If it does not, the reviewer or Google removed it.
First: Confirm the Review Exists
Ask the customer to tap their profile picture in the Google app and open Your contributions > Reviews. If the review is listed there but not on your Business Profile, Google is filtering it. If it is not there at all, it was removed or never posted.
The Five Most Common Causes
1. Filtered for Policy Violations
Google removes reviews that violate prohibited and restricted content: profanity, personal attacks, off-topic content, promotional content, or conflicts of interest (employees, family). If the customer mentioned a competitor by name, used strong language, or attached irrelevant photos, the filter usually catches it.
Fix: Ask the customer to edit the review and remove the offending content.
2. Caught in the Spam Filter
Google's spam filter is aggressive and not always right. It flags:
- Reviews from brand-new Google accounts with no history.
- Multiple reviews from the same IP address (a common WiFi network).
- Bursts of reviews (10 in one day after months of nothing).
- Reviews left immediately after signing in to leave the review.
Fix: Wait 72 hours. Many filtered reviews reappear once the reviewer's account has more activity. Do not ask the customer to delete and re-post; that often makes it worse.
3. Duplicate or Merged Profiles
If your business has (or ever had) more than one Google listing, reviews may land on the duplicate. This happens after address changes, name changes, or accidental extra listings.
Fix: Search your business name in Google Maps and check for duplicates. Report them via Suggest an edit > Close or remove > Duplicate of another place.
4. Profile Suspension or Verification Issues
Suspended or unverified profiles hide reviews from public view until reinstated.
Fix: Sign in to business.google.com and look for a suspension banner. Follow the reinstatement flow. Reviews return once the profile is live.
5. The Reviewer Deleted It
Customers sometimes delete reviews after leaving them. This is often triggered by a follow-up email that felt aggressive, a bad response from the business, or simple regret.
Fix: Ask politely and once. Never pressure.
When to Contact Google Support
If a review is on the reviewer's profile, is not on yours, and has been missing for more than seven days, contact Google Business Profile support from your dashboard. Include the reviewer's name and the review date.
