Quick Answer
Aim for at least as many Google reviews as the top three competitors in your local map pack, then keep going. In most local service categories that means 40 to 100 reviews to start showing up, and 200-plus to consistently rank in competitive metros. Review count is only one signal. Recency, rating, and review content also matter.
Why There Is No Single Magic Number
Google does not publish a review threshold. Its local ranking documentation lists relevance, distance, and prominence as the three factors, and review quantity and rating fall under prominence. That means the right number depends on your competitors, not on a fixed benchmark.
How to Set Your Own Target
- Search your main keyword in Google Maps from your service area (for example, "plumber near me").
- Note the review counts of the top three results in the map pack.
- Set your target at the median of those three, then add 20 percent.
If the top three plumbers in your area have 180, 240, and 310 reviews, aim for about 290. That gives you room to pull ahead as they keep collecting reviews too.
Realistic Timelines
Even with automation, review growth is a slow curve for most local businesses. Expect:
- Month 1-2: systems in place, first wave of requests.
- Month 3-6: steady flow, usually a few reviews per week.
- Month 6-12: compounding, as recent reviews continue to earn map pack visibility.
Why Recency Matters As Much As Count
A business with 400 reviews and nothing in the last year often loses to a business with 120 reviews collected over the last 90 days. Google favors signals that indicate the business is still operating and still serving customers. A steady drip of new reviews beats a big historical pile.
Quality Signals Beyond the Number
- Average rating in the 4.5 to 5.0 range.
- Review content that mentions services and neighborhoods (natural, not stuffed).
- Owner responses to a healthy share of reviews.
- Photos attached to reviews.
