Google reviews are the single biggest driver of new local customers. More reviews means higher rankings in the Google Map Pack, more clicks to your website, and more trust before a prospect ever talks to you.
Here's the playbook we use with hundreds of local service businesses.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Before you ask for a single review, make sure your Google Business Profile is 100% filled out: correct name, address, phone, hours, service area, categories, photos, and services. A complete profile ranks higher and converts more of the traffic you already earn.
2. Ask every single customer
The #1 reason businesses don't get reviews is simple: they don't ask. Make asking part of your standard job-completion process — not an afterthought.
- Ask in person when the job is done and the customer is happy
- Follow up with a text message the same day
- Send one polite reminder 2–3 days later if they haven't responded
3. Send the request by text, not email
Text messages are typically opened at much higher rates than email — industry sources like Gartner and EZ Texting commonly cite SMS open rates around 98% compared with roughly 20% for email. If you want reviews, text your customers a short message with a direct link to your Google review page.
A simple template that works:
Hi {{first_name}}, thanks for choosing {{business_name}}! If we did a great job, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It really helps our small business. {{review_link}}
4. Make the link one tap
Never send customers to your homepage or ask them to "search us on Google." Send them straight to your Google review form using your Place ID review link (see our guide on finding your Google review link).
5. Time it right
The best time to ask is within 24 hours of finishing the job, while the experience is fresh. Wait too long and response rates fall off a cliff.
6. Automate the follow-up
Manually texting every customer works — until you get busy. Tools like SoTrustworthy connect to your CRM (Jobber, HubSpot, Housecall Pro) and send the review request automatically the moment a job is marked complete.
7. Respond to every review
Reply to every review — good and bad — within 48 hours. Google rewards active profiles, and prospects read your responses just as carefully as they read the reviews themselves.
8. Never buy reviews or gate them
Paying for reviews violates Google's terms and can get your profile suspended. So does review gating — filtering happy customers to Google and unhappy ones to a private form.
The bottom line
Consistent asking + one-tap links + automated follow-up = a steady stream of 5-star reviews. Set the system up once and it runs in the background forever.
